Rules, timing for edibles remain murky as planned October legalization approaches

Uncertainty still remains for the future of edibles, with regulations and timing murky.

On Saturday a panel of cannabis industry leaders took the stage during the Cannabis and Hemp Expo at BMO Centre to speak about the future of edibles.

The federal government released its proposed regulations for edibles on Dec. 20. The rules limit the amount of THC, the key psychoactive component in cannabis, to 10 mg per edible and it must be individually wrapped. The regulations also say packaging has to be child-resistant and plain, in addition to displaying the standard cannabis symbol with a health warning. There are also restrictions on ingredients, like sweeteners or colourants, that might make products more appealing to children.

Health Canada is now reviewing the responses from a two-month consultation period on the proposed regulations.
