Medical pot shops hold public expo, complete with cooking demos, to reduce stigma of product

In the lobby of a nondescript Vernon Hills office building on a recent afternoon, a crowd of onlookers watched a cooking demonstration featuring a recipe for marijuana-infused brownies.

Across the room, a table displayed glass smoking pipes and, a couple of booths over, samples were offer of foil-wrapped flavored chocolates that, should a customer have the proper licensing, can be laced with marijuana.

Organizers estimated that several hundred people attended an expo Sunday sponsored by the three medical marijuana dispensaries currently operating in Lake County. The event was designed to be an opportunity for those looking to learn about medical marijuana and it was also hoped, organizers said, that current users would be able to connect with dispensaries, product vendors and researchers in an informal setting.
