“The key to good decision making is not knowledge,” said Malcolm Gladwell in his book Blink. “It is understanding.”
Gladwell wrote an article in the New Yorker recently, titled “Is Marijuana as Safe as We Think?” I found it timely, given that New Hampshire legislators are weighing whether to legalize marijuana for recreational use and commercial sale.
The current discussion is in line with growing national trends, and our state already dipped its toe into the water by decriminalizing possession of certain amounts.
But I question the merits of recreational legalization because I believe we lack the understanding and requisite planning to make good long-term decisions at this time. Even as someone who works in the field of national fiscal policy, the projected glut of tax revenue to our state is not enough to dismiss my concerns.
