Hingham Planning Board holds meetings on retail sale of marijuana

“Local communities have some authority to regulate recreational marijuana through general by-laws, zoning by-laws, and possibly through health regulations,” said Real Estate Town Counsel Susan Murphy.

Hingham is considered to be a “no” community since a majority of the town’s voters opposed the November 2016 statewide ballot question that would legalize the sale of recreational marijuana in Massachusetts. However, the question passed statewide.

“Local communities have some authority to regulate recreational marijuana through general by-laws, zoning by-laws, and possibly through health regulations,” said Real Estate Town Counsel Susan Murphy.

In contrast to the 2016 vote, in the Nov. 2012 election, 60 percent of Hingham voters answered favorably on Question 3 calling for the elimination of state criminal and civil penalties related to the medical use of marijuana.
