Florida lawmakers still fighting medical marijuana | Opinion

If you’re one of the few remaining optimists who believe lawmakers have your back, that’s about to go up in smoke.

The Florida Legislature is aggressively working to neuter your constitutional right to obtain medical marijuana. In November, a whopping 71 percent of Floridians passed an amendment that legalized cannabis for patients who suffer from a range of ailments.

Lawmakers now must create guidelines for obtaining and dispensing cannabis. Instead, they’re working with the same people who opposed the amendment to create a draconian policy that will makes it as restrictive as possible. Florida is not exactly known for its educational system, so I suppose 29 percent is greater than 71 percent?

The House’s lone marijuana bill passed the Health Quality subcommittee 14-1 this week. It will be heard by two more committees before facing a floor vote.
